February is Black History Month and National Children’s Dental Health Month

Discover how GoEngage can enhance and support your efforts.

Celebrating Black History Month in Head Start Programs

February is Black History Month, a time to honor the achievements, contributions, and culture of African Americans throughout history. It’s an opportunity for Head Start programs to educate children and families about the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Why Black History Month Matters

Black History Month serves as a reminder to recognize the struggles and triumphs of Black Americans, from the early history of enslavement to the Civil Rights Movement, and the impact these events continue to have today. By acknowledging this history, we also teach the value of empathy, respect, and understanding in our communities.

Ideas for Head Start Programs and How GoEngage Can Support These Efforts

Head Start programs can use Black History Month as an opportunity to build meaningful connections with families and promote learning. Some ideas to consider include:

  • Host virtual or in-person storytelling sessions featuring Black authors and historical figures.

  • Incorporate activities such as coloring pages, art projects, and books that highlight key Black leaders in education, science, arts, and politics.

  • Share cultural recipes or crafts from African American traditions that families can try at home.

  • Create a family activity booklet on Black History, allowing parents and children to engage in educational activities at home and report back to the program.

GoEngage offers a variety of tools to help Head Start programs implement these initiatives and enhance family engagement:

  • Streamlined Communication: Leverage GoEngage’s messaging and announcement features to easily share event details for virtual or in-person events, keeping families informed and engaged in storytelling sessions or other events celebrating Black authors and historical figures. Track invites, RSVPs, and identify families needing transportation. Monitor attendance, and automatically capture father/father figure participation in your PIR C.46, as well as any related services in PIR C.44.

  • Track and Share Activities: With GoEngage, you can effortlessly create, share, and monitor family participation in at-home activities like coloring pages, art projects, and book discussions. Plus, GoEngage automatically counts these contributions towards your in-kind efforts, streamlining the process and lightening the load on your fiscal team.

  • Incorporate Cultural Learning: GoEngage makes sharing cultural activities, such as recipes or crafts, simple and effective. Families can access these resources and report their participation through the platform, enhancing at-home engagement with Black History Month traditions. Additionally, you can easily track these contributions digitally, reducing the administrative burden on your fiscal team.

  • Engage Families with Activity Booklets: GoEngage’s customizable tools allow you to design and distribute activity booklets focused on Black History. Families can complete the activities and submit their progress, which can be tracked via GoEngage’s reporting tools, ensuring continuous learning and engagement. And, just like other activities, you can effortlessly count these contributions digitally, easing the administrative workload for your fiscal team.

By using GoEngage to support these initiatives, Head Start programs can streamline communication, track progress, and enhance family involvement in learning activities, creating a seamless experience for both educators and families.

National Children’s Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, a time to emphasize the importance of early dental care in a child’s overall well-being. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, tooth decay is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions, yet it is largely preventable with regular check-ups and proper oral hygiene. For Head Start programs, ensuring that children receive the dental care they need is crucial for their health, confidence, and ability to thrive in the classroom.

Here are some key reminders for promoting good oral health in young children:

  • ✅ Encourage daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste.

  • ✅ Schedule regular dental check-ups.

  • ✅ Promote healthy eating habits to reduce cavities.

  • ✅ Educate families on the importance of early dental care.

How GoEngage Helps Track and Monitor Children’s Dental Health

Managing and monitoring children's dental health within Head Start programs can be challenging, but GoEngage simplifies the process by providing an efficient way to track dental visits, screenings, and follow-ups.

With GoEngage, you can:

  • 📌 Track dental screenings and exam dates to ensure timely visits.

  • 📌 Monitor treatment plans and follow-up care for children in need.

  • 📌 Review POP Dashboards to identify trends and ensure compliance with Head Start requirements.

  • 📌 Engage Families with reminders and resources to support at-home oral care.

By leveraging GoEngage, Head Start programs can streamline dental health management, improve compliance, and ensure every child receives the care they deserve.

Did You Know… Our Chronic Absenteeism Program Outcome Portal (POP) Can Help you Spot Key Trends

With the POP, you can easily monitor trends in chronic absenteeism across various factors, including race, ethnicity, gender, IEP status, full-day/part-day attendance, zip codes, and more.

Being able to view and analyze trends in chronic absenteeism is essential to identify potential barriers to attendance and intervene effectively. By examining patterns across different demographics programs can:

  • Identify At-Risk Groups: Recognizing trends in absenteeism among specific populations allows programs to tailor interventions and support to the families or communities who need it most, ensuring no child is left behind.

  • Develop Targeted Strategies: Data trends enable programs to design more effective outreach and engagement strategies, addressing root causes of absenteeism, whether they stem from transportation issues, health challenges, or family circumstances.

  • Improve Program Outcomes: Understanding when and where absenteeism is most pronounced helps programs focus their resources on areas that will have the most impact. Early intervention can lead to improved attendance, better educational outcomes, and long-term success for children.

  • Meet Compliance and Drive Continuous Quality Improvement: Head Start programs are required to track and report on various performance metrics, including attendance. Analyzing trends not only simplifies compliance but also showcases how the program is actively reviewing data and making data-driven adjustments to foster ongoing quality improvement.

By leveraging trend data from the Chronic Absenteeism Program Outcome Portal (POP), programs can better meet the needs of children and families, leading to stronger program outcomes and enhanced community support.

Not All Head Start Data Management Systems Are the Same

When it comes to PIR reporting, accuracy matters—but not all Head Start data management systems handle it the same way. Many programs face challenges when tracking parents who are both working and in school. GoEngage eliminates manual errors by automatically categorizing families for accurate PIR reporting as one example in C.37.

  • Pulls data directly from parent demographics

  • Accurately categorizes families with overlapping roles

  • Saves time and reduces reporting errors

Your program deserves a system that gets PIR reporting right the first time.
